Leeds’ most famous butchers Malcolm Michaels will be opening a new shop.
Boss Malcolm Leary, 54, has spoken about the exciting plans and has revealed the ideal opening date. He’s currently in discussions with the owner of Wakefield Ridings Shopping Centre with ambitions to open a unit there in the summer.
Malcolm said ex-employee and delivery driver Youtube Rate My Takeaway star Danny Malin will have substantial involvement in promotion of the new store. And long-term employee Wakefield man Kieran Martin, 27, who’s worked for the business for 12 years will be taking the reins at the shop.

Speaking of the prospect of opening up in Wakefield, Malcolm said: “With 30,000 followers on Facebook, we intend to introduce ourselves to the area on the same platform.
“Kieran is well known in Wakefield and it seems like an obvious opportunity to put him in his own unit to look after on his own doorstep. When we opened in Kirkgate Market in 1993, nobody knew us and we pushed ourselves and we got ourselves where we needed to be. If it means small steps then we’ll do small steps.”
This comes a year after moved the business from Kirkgate Market to Crossgates Shopping Centre, after trading in the Leeds city centre market since 1993. He’s said the last year in Crossgates has been phenomenal and he couldn’t be happier with the stall.
Pal Danny recently held a meet-and-greet event at the Ridings Shopping Centre which went down really well. Malcolm divulged that he’d be looking to acquire a 10-year lease on the unit which would come with an initial 12 months rent free guarantee.
Malcolm said: “The Ridings Shopping Centre has been bought by an independent buyer who is trying to promote independent traders. He’s offering cheap rents and he’s putting a massive play area in there for children. He’s really promoting the centre well. So we’re in talks for that for shop number two.”
The Leeds grandad added he’s eyeing plans to open up the new unit in early August. He's also ditched plans to open a shop in Leeds city centre, which were long-mooted after leaving Kirkgate Market.
