Leeds hotel hits back as taxi driver says it's 'most frustrating' place to park in city

A Leeds hotel has been branded one of the most 'frustrating' places to park in the city by an Uber driver.

Armley man Faraz Khan, 36, has worked for Uber since 2015 and knows all the ins and outs of the city. He says taxi drivers are constantly picking up fines with new confusing road rules and no-go areas.

Driving around Leeds can become costly for unsuspecting taxi drivers who slip up on the rules. The father-of-two, six and 13, from Pakistan says he knows people who have been fined before from falling foul of rules.

He's said Weetwood Hall and Estate is one of the most 'frustrating' places to pick up and drop off due to its stringent rules. The four-star hotel is based off the Ring Road near Otley Road, close to Headingley. The building has been adapted from a 17th-century Jacobean manor house.

Faraz said: “In Weetwood Hotel, you used to be able to drop off a passenger there or pickup nice and easy. Now when you go there, you have to log in to reception and register your car in there.

"You have to check in basically, if you don’t do that – you will get a £60 fine. It hasn’t happened to me but it has happened to other drivers."

Steven Kershaw, General Manager, Weetwood Hall said: “We have recently introduced an electronic parking permit system due to our car parking facilities being used by non-residents of Weetwood Hall this has impacted our actual guests not been able to park. The electronic parking permit is common amongst hotels and in particular our neighbouring hotels have a similar system.

"There is a drop of period of 14 minutes which is adequate for taxi drivers collecting or dropping off any guests. If for any reason any taxi or private hire driver runs over this time, they can register their details at hotel reception.

"On the extremely rare occasion where a charge has been issued, we ensure the car park management company cancelled the charge.

"We would like to extend to all taxi and private hire drivers the opportunity when they are next at Weetwood Hall to come in and we will register their details permanently, so they don’t have to come in on any visits over 14 minutes."
