Leeds Bradford Airport sees 'Biblical queues' in early hours of Jubilee Friday

Passengers arriving at Leeds Bradford Airport for Jubilee Weekend getaways have once again been facing 'Biblical' queues - even in the early hours of this morning.

Retired Police Chief Superintendent Owen West was among those caught up in the chaos. He shared photos of the sight that greeted him on Twitter.

Mr West, who is travelling to Spain, said: "Biblical queues. Once in out, out of the rain, it’s right around the inside of the building to get to the security queue."

He told Leeds Live: "Queue so big now one lad just took some pints from the bar down into his mates in the security queue." Somewhat ironically, Mr West's twitter handle is @PolicingCrowds.

David Cass also shared photos from outside the terminal commenting that it was "a bit busy at Leeds Bradford airport this morning".

The airport has been dogged with long queues since May, and on Wednesday June 1 queues also stretched from outside through to security. The airport has struggled with staff shortage with many flights being delayed.

And it was a similar scenario on Thursday morning, with some airport goers arriving up to four hours before their flight in a bid to avoid the chaos.

However, in a pinned tweet on from May 17, the airport said: "If you're due to travel from @LBIAirport this week, please arrive no earlier than three hours before your departure time. You can help to speed up your passage through security by familiarising yourself with the process."

Last month LBA chief executive Vincent Hodder asking people to come to Leeds Bradford "no earlier than three hours" before their scheduled departure time. Mr Hodder has said that people arriving early for their flights is leading to a "blow-out of queues".

The airport has repeatedly said that the root cause of the issues at the airport is a shortage of staff and that "these current challenges are an industry wide problem, caused by the speed of withdrawal of travel restrictions and testing which has led to the rapid recovery of international travel".
