Lee Johnson hints at Hibs transfer activity after Aiden McGeady injury blow

Hibs manager Lee Johnson is hopeful of a speedy recovery for veteran winger Aiden McGeady as he prepares to head back into the transfer market.

The former Celtic attacker signed for the Edinburgh club after a spell working under Johnson at Sunderland but has suffered a reoccurrence of a problematic knee problem, just four competitive games into his Leith stint. Hibs start their Premiership season away at St Johnstone on Saturday and Johnson said of the timescale for McGeady's recovery: “It’s a disappointing one.

"He’s going to be out for a sustained period of time after aggravating his previous medial ligament injury. It’s hard to put a timescale on it but it’s going to be minimum six weeks, although it probably averages about 10 weeks. I’m disappointed for Aiden first and foremost. He’s worked extremely hard to get back to a level of fitness that is capable of performing at Premiership level and unfortunately this has happened.

“It’s not ideal but it’s why you have a squad. Somebody else has got to fill that void on a leadership level and a performance level. We just do our best to recover him as quickly as possible.”

Hibs have been busy in the window this summer under Johnson's guidance. New recruits Matija Cabraja and Elie Youan have had their work permits finalised ahead of the weekend with ins and outs still expected at Easter Road.

Johnson added: "We're looking forward to stepping into our bread and butter. Our squad is shaping up but it isn't finished.

"I still think we'll add a couple and move a couple on, or allow them to develop by going out on loan is probably a better phrase.

"At the same time, the ones that have been here, they are physically in a good place. Tactically we've had enough sessions to put out a team. There's no reason not to go into this first game with positivity."
