Lee Johnson handing big Hibs responsibility to David Gray as club legend opens up on latest manager

David Gray says Lee Johnson has been a great help for him as the club legend adjusts to coaching under another new manager.

The 2016 Scottish Cup winning hero has been a familiar face amid 12 months of change at Easter Road. Johnson is the third boss in the last year after Jack Ross and Shaun Maloney, with Gray having to step in as caretaker on two occasions. Now on the Hibs coaching staff with Johnson, Jamie McAllister, Adam Owen and Stuart Garde, it's been a lot to deal with for the former right-back after retiring from playing last year.

But it's challenge he has embraced and the current gaffer has been making sure he's well involved: “There’s always some uncertainty when a new manager starts, but I’m thoroughly enjoying it. He’s been excellent with me, as has Macca and Adam. Right from the start they’ve been helping familiarise myself with the philosophy and the way of playing.

"It helped too that I played with Macca before, so I wasn’t a complete stranger to the set-up. Straight away the manager explained how he wanted to play and that he wanted to keep me with him.

"It’s nice to hear that. He’s given me a lot of responsibility and we’re all pulling in the same direction. I’m thoroughly enjoying learning and adding to my coaching experience."

Hibs play Dundee United on Tuesday as they seek their fifth Premiership win in succession, Gray adding: "We go up there full of confidence with a mindset that we want to be coming home with three points."
