When it comes to well dressed celebrities, I think most of us would agree Hailey Bieber rarely puts a foot wrong. Her red carpet looks are mega glam yet always resolutely cool and her date night looks deserve every column inch they get, but it’s her off-duty wardrobe that really cements the model and beauty mogul as a style leader — and influences the items on our mental wish lists.
Right now, Mrs Bieber is living in her black vintage leather bomber jacket. Oversized, collared and with a worn-feel, Bieber’s bomber, which is from vintage dealer 23Lux, makes for the perfect transitional piece. In fact, she’s stepped out wearing it twice in the last week alone, and a further thrice since January (a rewear rate that’s unusual for someone in possession of a wardrobe the size Mrs B. does).
Whether paired with baggy jeans, a crop top, big hoop earrings and a red cap, or a mini skirt and loafers, Bieber has proven the leather bomber an endlessly versatile wardrobe investment that’s warm enough for windy days but infinitely more spring-friendly than a puffer.
And that’s the beauty of a bomber. Unlike a flimsy trench coat which really have very little insulating power, a bomber is perfect for those very British spring time days — and has the added bonus of adding just a little edginess to any outfit.
Khaite, Remain and Rick Owens all featured leather bombers as part of their spring/summer 23 shows, and the Attic’s puffy oversized bombers, which come in white leather and distressed green brown, were a firm favourite among the street style set at the recent fashion weeks.
On the high street, Me & Em has a sleek leather option that comes in black and sage and is smart enough to be workwear, while Zara and Whistles have some excellent affordable options — both real and faux. Topshop and Remain also both have brilliant brown suede bombers for a slightly softer take on the trend. The coolest though are to be found on vintage sites (try Rokit and Vestiare Collective) — size up for extra swagger.
