Leanne Ross delighted with Glasgow City player response

Glasgow City manager Leanne Ross was delighted with the response of her players as they saw off Spartans to set the club up for their Champions League round two qualifier against Brann on Wednesday night at Petershill.

Having lost to Celtic on Thursday night, Ross was eager to get a response which she duly did; City were 3-0 winners over Spartans after goals from Amy Muir and Breen Lovera with a Lauren Davidson penalty sandwiched in the middle.

“I was really pleased with the response after the defeat on Thursday,” said Ross. “We got the early goal which settled us but we could do more in the final third.

“Spartans are very good on the counter attack so we needed that second goal so I asked them to go out and make better decisions. We did that and we got the rewards we deserved.”

All eyes now turn to Wednesday night’s game.

“The players are in for a recovery session today and we are ready to go with our analysis and it should be exciting,” said Ross.

“There is always a bit of drama with the games that are at Petershill so hopefully we can come out on top and get a good result to take over to Norway next week.”

Elsewhere, Celtic captain Kelly Clark praised the resilience of the side after they saw off Motherwell with a 6-0 win to sustain their 100% start to the season.

They remain top of the SWPL with a two point lead over Rangers – they also won 6-0 against Hamilton Accies – and a five point lead over City following their unblemished start to the campaign.

“It is never easy coming in to play on a Sunday after playing on a Thursday but I thought we were excellent and scored some really good goals,” said Clark.

“We were able to make changes and stayed dominant. I am delighted to get the week over with six points banked.

“We spoke before the game about how important these games are and the importance of starting fast. We knew we wanted to get one and then another and then relax and play our game and I think we did that.

“It was a joy to see that first-half and a joy also to see some of the things that we work on in the training ground coming to life on the park.”

Celtic finished the game with five teenagers on the pitch with Kelly applauding their contribution.

“It is nice to see them on the park and their attitude has been really good since they came in so they deserve it,” she said. “The schedule is insane so knowing that there are players who can come off the bench and change the game or come on and keep the standard up is so important.”

Jo Potter’s side were comfortable winners over Hamilton with the former England internationalist delighted with the ruthlessness of her side.

"We need to make sure we aren't happy with scoring three or four goals - we want to score as many goals as possible,” she said “We won’t accept loose balls, we want to fight for every single ball.

"It's not happening by accident. I'm proud of the girls because they're bringing what we do in training into game days. We're asking more and more questions of them every week and they keep on producing."

Dundee United beat Aberdeen 3-2, while Partick Thistle beat Hibs 2-0 to move into fourth spot and Hearts drew 3-3 with Montrose.
