League One headlines: MacAnthony to leave Peterborough United, managerial departure in doubt

With Bristol Rovers and most of their rivals 10 games into their campaigns, there is plenty happening on the pitch in League One, but there are also lots of big stories brewing off the pitch in the third tier.

With the first international break – mercifully – almost at an end, managerial changes are already on the agenda, with Paul Warne replacing Liam Rosenior at Derby County last week. More changes in the dugout are certain in the coming weeks, and a big change in the boardroom at a League One club is also in the offing.

Here are the latest headlines from across League One...

MacAntonthy wants out of Peterborough

Peterborough United co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has revealed he wants to sell his share of the club.

MacAnthony is one of the most high-profile and outspoken executives in the EFL since taking control at London Road in 2006, but the 46-year-old – who is based in the United States – wants to spend more time with his family.

Dr Jason Neale and Stewart Thompson are co-owners of Posh with MacAnthony and it is unknown if either will buy out the Irishman's share or if new investment will be sought.

“Football will not be a priority for me next summer," MacAnthony said on his Hard Truth podcast. "My family have taken a back seat to Posh for too long so next summer I won’t be at the football club.

"I’m not the sort of person who can own something and take a back seat. That would drive me crazy. I have to be all in so I will need to sell and start doing stuff with my family.

"Whether or not my partners buy me out or someone else does we will see. It will hopefully be a chance for someone else to try different ideas with recruitment in the Championship because ideally, I want to bow out with another promotion.

"When my third child was born I flew straight out and went to watch Posh beat Leicester 2-0 in the season we went up automatically from League One. I can’t do that anymore.

“In the next 18 months, my son and my daughter will start college. I’ve missed too much time with them because of football.”

Bonner's set to stay at Cambridge

Cambridge United manager Mark Bonner emerged as a contender to fill the vacancy at Championship club Rotherham this week, but he is reportedly set to turn down the opportunity.

The 36-year-old was Rotherham's first-choice option to replace Paul Warne after he went to Derby County last week, but various reports indicate he is leaning towards staying at the Abbey Stadium.

Bonner has built his reputation at the Abbey Stadium, rising from the academy setup to manage the first team. He led them to a second-place finish in League Two in 2020/21 and he followed that up with a strong season in the third tier, finishing well clear of relegation trouble.

Clubs queuing up for League Two star

Only one player in the EFL can match Erling Haaland's haul of 11 goals so far this season: Northampton Town's Sam Hoskins.

Naturally, the attacking midfielder's stunning start to the season in League Two means he is attracting interest from higher up the pyramid, with several clubs reportedly poised to make move for the 29-year-old in January.

Football League World reports League One sides Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth, Barnsley and Derby County are interested in signing Hoskins, with Championship clubs Middlesbrough and Sunderland also reportedly keen.

Rosenior opens up on Derby exit

Liam Rosenior holds "no ill-feeling" despite his exit from Derby County. The 38-year-old was demoted from interim manager last week when the club appointed Paul Warne, and on Tuesday it was confirmed Rosenior was not part of the new regime and had left the club.

Rosenior took charge of 12 games this season after Wayne Rooney's departure and won seven games. Derby are 11th in League One.

Rosenior opened up on his exit on talkSPORT on Wednesday, admitting Warne is a strong appointment for the Rams. He said: "I am going to be really honest and say that I made it really clear that I thought I was the best person to take the club forward. And then there was an agreement that if I hit the expectations that the club expected of me then I would have a really good chance of getting the job on a permanent basis.

"That hasn't happened and I have no ill-feeling towards that because, and you've been in that situation Simon, you are always making decisions and sometimes they're hard decisions.

"But they are always in the best interests of the football club. I am someone who believes in building a team in the short and the long term. I think that always puts the club in the best position moving forward.

"But at the same time you know there are consequences of that in terms of 'was I the right person in terms of the best guarantee of promotion this season?' Probably not.

"I am open enough to say that but at the same time could I have been successful? Who knows. I am confident we would have been in the short term but at the same time as an owner, you cannot just look at what somebody is saying, you've got to look at a track record. Paul's track record in terms of getting out of League One is absolutely second to none."
