According to the FAI, these figures represent a 30% increase in prize money since 2019, although there were no increases in 2022 either.
Clubs used to pay annual affiliation fees - €17,000 for Premier Division, €8,000 for First Division - just to take part in the League of Ireland but these were scrapped before the 2021 season.
Asked about prize money for the 2023 SSE Airtricity League of Ireland season, League director Mark Scanlon said yesterday: “Obviously we’d love to see it increase.
“The prize fund isn’t where we want it to be but it has increased by 30 percent in the last three seasons. It’s a move in the right direction.
"We’re ambitious and want it to be higher, we want more revenue generated for the clubs.”
