Bear in mind that this box mattress is pretty heavy: it took two people to lift and carry a King-size Layla Hybrid Mattress up the stairs and into the bedroom. Once I opened the box and cut the plastic, it took around 24 hours for the smell of the mattress off-gassing to dissipate and for the bed to expand to its full size.

- Side sleepers: even on the firmer side, the Layla Hybrid Mattress has plenty of give, ideal for side sleepers who like to sink into their mattress.
- Hot sleepers: although the Layla Hybrid Mattress is topped with a layer of memory foam, it's infused with cooling copper to dissipate heat, wick moisture, and block odors.
- Light sleepers: the Layla Hybrid Mattress has excellent motion isolation. If you share your bed with a pet or partner who gets in and out of bed earlier or later than you do, you shouldn't be disturbed by their comings and goings.
What is the Layla Hybrid Mattress like to sleep on?
- Comfort and support: the whole point of a flippable mattress is the custom comfort. There's a plush side and a firm side. On a firmness scale of 1 to 10, Layla rates their soft side a 4 and their firm side a 7 (though I'd say it's more like a 6). Since I appreciate a more supportive mattress, I started testing the firm side, and that's how I slept for most of the testing period. I found that the Layla Hybrid Mattress has more than enough give to cushion my neck, shoulders, hips, and knees, and sufficient support to keep my spine aligned. I found that I started to sink through the top layer of foam without much effort, so I slept most comfortably on my side. I wouldn't say that the Layla Hybrid Mattress is the best firm mattress I've ever tried: it's better for pressure relief than spinal support.
- Breathability: as a hot sleeper, I was a little nervous to test the Layla Hybrid Mattress. I knew it was topped with memory foam, which tends to trap heat. On closer inspection, however, I found that the Layla Hybrid Mattress incorporates gel memory foam to better dissipate heat and wick moisture. Still, if you suffer from night sweats or hot flashes, you need a mattress to actively keep you cool. I recommend the Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt Hybrid Mattress.
- Motion isolation: your average hybrid mattress has a bit of bounce, which makes it easier to get into and out of bed, but makes for a bit of motion transfer. That's why I was so impressed with the motion isolation on the Layla Hybrid Mattress. When my partner got out of bed in the morning or in the middle of the night, I couldn't feel it over on my side. I'd recommend the Layla Hybrid Mattress for light sleepers and anyone who shares their bed with a pet or partner.
- Edge support: the Layla Hybrid Mattress is lined with supportive steel coils and double-lined around the sides to enhance edge support. I could comfortably sit on the side of the bed to apply lotion or tie my shoes without worrying that I'd start to slip, but I did create a big dip in the mattress. - Warranty: the Layla Hybrid Mattress comes with a 10-year mattress warranty that protects against split seams and loss of mattress shape beyond one inch. 10 years might not sound quite as impressive as a lifetime warranty, but it's far more realistic. Even the best hybrid mattress won't last you much longer than a decade, and then you'll have to start looking for a new bed.
