A recent lawsuit filed by 95 individuals who were formerly housed at Illinois youth centers as children has shed light on pervasive and systemic child sexual abuse that reportedly occurred over several decades. The disturbing accounts detailed in the 186-page complaint span from 1996 to 2017 and include harrowing incidents such as gang rape, forced oral sex, beatings, and groping by various personnel at nine youth centers across the state.
The lawsuit alleges that the State of Illinois failed to address a culture of abuse that allowed such misconduct to persist unchecked. The plaintiffs recount instances of threats and rewards used to silence victims, with many claiming that their reports of abuse were ignored or dismissed by facility administrators.
