Members of a synagogue in Los Angeles have taken legal action against three major protest groups for organizing a disruptive protest that impeded Jewish individuals from accessing their place of worship last month. The lawsuit, filed by the StandWithUs Center for Legal Justice (SCLJ) on behalf of seven synagogue members, targets CodePink, Palestinian Youth Movement, and WESPAC Foundation.
The lawsuit alleges that the protest escalated into violence, with reports of bear spray being used and individuals sustaining injuries. The SCLJ is seeking damages for multiple counts of threatening and intimidating behavior, with each violation carrying a penalty of around $5,000, in addition to punitive damages.
President Biden condemned the incident, labeling it as dangerous, antisemitic, and un-American. The lawsuit argues that the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act should apply in this case, as it protects individuals exercising their First Amendment right to religious freedom from intimidation or interference.
One of the plaintiffs expressed shock at the events, stating that the protest was a departure from the values of the America they know. The SCLJ emphasized that the protest groups organized over 200 individuals to obstruct Jewish citizens from practicing their religious beliefs, constituting clear violations of federal and state laws.
The lawsuit also highlights past statements made by organizers of the protest groups, including celebrating terror attacks and alleged associations with Holocaust deniers and Hamas officials. The plaintiffs underscore the need for accountability and consequences for those who engage in violent acts that impede religious freedom.
