Lawrence Shankland lifts lid on Derek McInnes Rangers reunion after title run

Lawrence Shankland has lifted the lid on his thoughts as he prepares to be reunited with former boss Derek McInnes again at Rangers.

The new Ibrox pair worked together at Hearts and, last season, were three minutes away from winning an historic league title for the Jambos before being pipped at the post.

Shankland's form in recent seasons earned him a move to his boyhood club after he was snapped up while Danny Rohl was still head coach. But after the German moved to RB Salzburg, McInnes was quickly identified as the prime candidate to replace him in Glasgow.

For Shanks, hearing the news while out in the USA with Scotland at the World Cup, it was a welcome update from back home.

And the 30-year-old feels his former - and new - gaffer deserves his own crack at the Rangers helm.

"I seen the news while I was over here," he said, "Listen, I'm pleased for the manager. It's a good opportunity for him. I'm pleased for myself to be there.

"I've not had too much time to think about it to be honest. It's something I've put to the back of my mind. I'm looking forward to a fresh start when I go back but right now I'm looking to focus on this World Cup and enjoy this tournament."

Asked how tough it has been for Shankland to take stock of a whirlwind few months, he added: "Time's went really fast to be honest. When I looked back and looked at the date from when everything happened at the end of the season to get to this point, it's actually not been that long.

"But it does feel a while! The main thing is I want to try and enjoy this tournament and I'll think about the rest of the stuff when I get back home."
