King Charles gets thunderous applause for ‘checks and balances’ remark in Congress speech

  • US lawmakers stood and erupted in applause when King Charles emphasized that the U.S. is built on the idea of checks and balances.
  • “Our Declaration of Rights of 1689 was not only the foundation of our constitutional Monarchy, but also provided the source of so many of the principles reiterated – often verbatim – in the American Bill of Rights of 1791,” the King said.
  • “And those roots go even further back in our history: the U.S. Supreme Court Historical Society has calculated that Magna Carta is cited in at least 160 Supreme Court cases since 1789, not least as the foundation of the principle that executive power is subject to checks and balances.”
  • Social media users were quick to note the moment, with one writing, “This is one hell of a great speech by King Charles to the U.S. Congress. Quite refreshing to see Democrats and Republicans standing together and applauding ‘checks and balances.’”
  • A second person wrote, “Everyone knows who the King has just referred to. This is absolute GOLD from His Majesty here - and only he can deliver it so deftly.”
