Laura Wolvaardt, Beth Mooney fifties take Gujarat Giants to 199/5 in WPL

NEW DELHI: Gujarat Giants showcased a splendid batting performance, posting a challenging total of 199 for 5 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in their Women's Premier League (WPL) match in Delhi on Wednesday.

The opening pair of Laura Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney played a pivotal role in setting up the imposing score, amassing 140 runs in 13 overs.

Wolvaardt, in particular, displayed a free-flowing innings, scoring 76 off 45 balls, while the elegant Mooney remained unbeaten with a regal 85 off 51 balls.

The Feroz Shah Kotla pitch favored the batters, and the RCB bowlers struggled to find the right length. Both Wolvaardt and Mooney capitalised on the half-trackers during the Powerplay overs.

Despite some attempts by bowlers like Sophie Devine and Renuka Thakur, the Giants' openers dominated, with Mooney showcasing crisp cover drives and Wolvaardt displaying powerful pulls.

Wolvaardt's departure led to a partnership between Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield, adding 52 runs in just 5.3 overs. Mooney, with her excellent shot selection, registered 12 fours and a massive six over mid-wicket.

However, the Gujarat skipper found herself stranded at the non-striker's end towards the end, with only seven runs added off the last 10 balls and four dismissals. Despite this, the Giants posted an imposing total against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
