Scotland's Laura Muir won 1500m at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham as she beat off Northern Ireland's Ciara Mageean and compatriot Jemma Reekie for top spot.
Muir was the favourite heading into the long distance event having already taken home bronze in the 800m. The Inverness born runner was determined to improve on that and had been tipped to go the distance and take home Scotland's 12th gold of the games.
And despite a strong race from Mageean who ensured Muir to push herself right until the final stretch, it was the Scot who won it with an accomplished run. It means Muir will leave the games 1500m gold and 800m bronze, to go with the world 1500m bronze she won at the World Championships.
Sport Scotland Director of High Performance, Mike Whittingham said: “Laura Muir has again delivered on the global stage with a stunning race to win gold in the 1500m. She is one of the world’s leading athletes and continues to deliver when it matters most. She is an inspiration to the next generation.”
