Laura Carmichael has revealed all she knows about a potential new movie from the Downton Abbey franchise.
Appearing on This Morning on Tuesday [August 16], the Lady Edith Crawley actress was quizzed about if another movie from the television period drama series is in the works, following the success of 2022 feature, Downton Abbey: A New Era.
Laura, who is in a relationship with her Downton Abbey co-star Michael C. Fox, is best known for her portrayal of Lady Edith Crawley in the popular ITV series and has appeared in both spin-off films focused on the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their domestic servants in the post-Edwardian era.
During the 36-year-old's visit to the This Morning studios on Tuesday morning, host Rochelle Humes and Andi Peters couldn't resist grilling the star to see if she had an gossip about a third movie from the popular franchise.
Dimming the lights in the studio, Andi jokingly asked the actress: "Laura Carmichael, to win yourself a free lunch on ITV, please answer my questions to the best of my knowledge. Will there be another Downton Abbey movie with you in it?"
Laughing, the mum-of-one replied: "I really don't know" - causing Andi asking for the lights to be turned back on and quipping for the chef to "keep the food" following Laura's failure to give a definitive answer.
"You never know," Laura continued. "I'm not saying no - it's down to other people."
Rochelle added: "And I suppose it's something you'd love to do?"
"Yeah," Laura replied, "We really do."
Laura was on the This Morning sofa to discuss her latest TV role away from the world of Downton Abbey, as she's set to star in a new series of a popular BBC thriller.
In The Secrets She Keeps, Laura plays the role of Agatha – a complicated character in her mid 30s who strikes up an unlikely friendship with yummy-mummy influencer Meghan (Jessica De Gouw).
Series one saw the pair bond over their respective pregnancies but cumulated with Agatha locked up, after being charged with the abduction of Meghan’s newborn baby.
Speaking to the Radio Times about her latest role - one that is strikingly different to her Downton Abbey alter-ego - Laura opened up about the struggle to avoid being typecast.
"You can’t control what other people think of you," she told the publication.
"I enjoy a challenge and I’m keen to try on different hats. When you do something for a long time, things become comfortable – you want to push yourself. I’m also conscious that if people have enjoyed watching you in something, that’s a complete privilege.
"It’s been such a gift being in Downton. It’s opened so many doors. If another period drama came across my desk... if I loved the script, I wouldn’t be too nervous of entering that world. But at the moment I’m drawn to things that feel different."
