It was unthinkable a year ago that speculation would grow about Marcelo Bielsa's job security at Leeds United. Throughout the Argentine's time at Elland Road, the team have been on an upward trajectory and the question was always around whether Bielsa himself would want to continue working in England, rather than Leeds ever contemplating the idea of moving on from their coach.
However, this season things have somewhat unravelled and a run of one point from five games, culminating in a 6-0 loss away to Liverpool have caused speculation around whether the Argentine could be sacked.
On TalkSPORT, Simon Jordan dismissed the idea as 'laughable' and said that Leeds' best course of action would be trusting their coach to get them out of the mire of a relegation battle.
"This is the style that they play. They’ve had this situation where they’ve had a depleted squad for the entirety of the season.
“There is an element of – where these key components are out of their side – it affects the whole axis of how this team plays.
“It is laughable to suggest that Leeds United need to be replacing him [Bielsa] right now. "
Jordan was speaking on the show he co-hosts with Jim White and White suggested that Bielsa would at the every least have to make big changes in order to fix the Whites' problems. Again, Jordan disagreed:
"No, stick to your principles. What a ridiculous thing to do, if you suddenly change because of outside influences," replied Jordan, incredulously.
White pointed out that Leeds had been conceding goals at an alarming rate, with opponents scoring at least three times in the last four games. This still wasn't enough to convince the former Crystal Palace chairman though.
"So what? There are other teams in this division that are far worse than they are.
"This is a difficult time for Leeds United. I’ve always said I’m not going to bow at the temple of Bielsa and I get fed up with the narrative [around him as a coach] but they are a very compelling football team.
"They’ll come through this and then they can consider whether Bielsa is able to kick on.
"I don’t think they should change [now] though. Bielsa has built this team to play in this way. He doesn’t have the players that know how to change so he’s going to have to make them be more effective.
"Yes, it’s a hell of a tanking at Liverpool but with due respect, there’s going to be a few sides who’ll get that from Liverpool because they’re playing so well."
