Laufey became a Gen Z icon by taking her love of classical music and using it to write the sort of intimately confessional songs that have made superstars of Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo. That warm poetry made perfect sense when she headlined the Royal Albert Hall, The Roundhouse and Union Chapel in recent years but on Sunday night, the Grammy-winner played the first of two sold-out shows at London’s O2 Arena.
Any doubts she could pull it off were dashed the moment you walked into the venue and made your way past the community book exchange. Fans wore handmade felt crowns as part of the “Laufeycore” dress code and later, giant white bunny mascot Mei Mei awarded the best dressed guest title to someone who’d spent three months crocheting their own Laufey-inspired outfit.
