Two major Latino civil rights groups, a voting rights organization and the city of Denver sued the Trump administration Thursday to prevent armed immigration agents from being deployed to polling places during the November midterm elections, invoking a largely untested Civil War-era law.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Washington, seeks a declaration that sending armed federal agents to voting sites would violate an 1865 statute generally barring federal officials from ordering "troops or armed men" to places where elections are held.
