Latest petrol prices at Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's as Morrisons announces big fuel cut

Supermarkets are cutting fuel prices after coming under pressure to reduce the record high prices people have been paying for petrol and diesel.

Bosses have been criticised for the deals drivers were getting, which many said were unfair. Wholesale prices hit record highs earlier this year, but have now slumped slightly.

On average, the current cost of petrol is 182.11p per litre, and the current cost of diesel is 192.06p. This is according to the RAC.

Drivers are still paying a lot more than they were at the beginning of 2022, despite fuel prices slowly coming down. In recent weeks, nearly £5 has come off the cost off a 55-litre tank of petrol, the Mirror reports.

At the beginning of January, prices were at an average of 145p for petrol and 148p for diesel.

Supermarkets are now thankfully starting to reduce their prices a little bit, as RAC fuel spokesperson Simon Williams welcomes the deductions.

However, he said: “Sadly though, the UK’s biggest fuel retailers aren’t cutting their prices at the scale they should be, given the wholesale prices of both fuels – what retailers pay themselves – have dropped so much.

“This is one of the worst examples we’ve seen of pump prices falling like a feather despite the wholesale market plunging.”

Here's the price for fuel at the major supermarkets:

Asda

Asda announced on Friday, July 29, that it would be cutting fuel prices. Unleaded prices have been reduced by 5p, and diesel by 3p.

This is effective across all of Asda's UK petrol stations. It means the average Asda price for unleaded will be 174p, and 185p for diesel.

AA fuel price spokesman Luke Bosdet said: "Asda’s price move is impressive, in effect cutting 10p a litre off the UK average price of petrol.

"That’s potentially a fiver off a tank for those filling up this weekend, compared to the artificially-high prices on too many major retailer forecourts and in too many towns."

Morrisons

Over the last week, Morrisons has cut costs of unleaded and diesel by 6p a litre on average.

Andrew Ball, Fuel Operations Manager at Morrisons, said: "It's the summer holidays and we know how tough the current cost of living is for our customers. So we hope this fuel price reduction will help motorists to save money at this challenging time."

Tesco

Tesco has made the biggest cut. The price of petrol has been reduced by 6.5p, and the price of diesel by 4.5p.

This is across all 600 of Tesco's petrol stations.

Tesco chief product officer Ashwin Prasad said: "We know how tough rising fuel bills have been for households across the UK, and so we hope that these price cuts will go some way to help - particularly as more families head out on their summer holidays this week."

Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's has brought in reductions in two stages, with cuts of 5p on average.

Victoria Newman, head of corporate communications for Sainsbury's said: “We are committed to offering motorists great value and over the weekend we lowered the price of petrol and diesel across our forecourts.

“We price locally and competitively.”

Co-Op

Co-Op, which has 133 petrol stations in the UK, has cut petrol prices by 2p across them all.
