New players at the late-summer box office are facing tough competition from established films. Holdovers like Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, and It Ends With Us are dominating the August box office, outperforming the latest releases Blink Twice and The Crow reboot.
Blink Twice, a suspense thriller marking Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut and starring Channing Tatum, is projected to open in fourth place with earnings between $7.1 million to $7.4 million. Despite receiving relatively positive reviews, the film received a B- CinemaScore from audiences, impacting its box office performance. The story follows tech billionaire Slater King (Tatum) and cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) on a mysterious vacation that takes a dark turn.
On the other hand, The Crow reboot, released 30 years after the original, is anticipated to secure the seventh spot with an estimated $4.5 million to $5 million. Starring Bill Skarsgard, the film failed to impress both audiences and critics, receiving a B- CinemaScore and negative reviews.
Among the new releases, the faith-based film The Forge stands out, receiving an A- CinemaScore and positive audience feedback. It is expected to secure a spot in the top five with earnings exceeding $6 million.
In the top spots, Marvel Studios and Disney's Deadpool & Wolverine is set to reclaim the first position in its fifth weekend, earning between $17 million to $18 million. Alien: Romulus from 20th Century and Disney will likely fall to second place with an estimated $16 million in its second week. Sony's It Ends With Us, featuring Blake Lively, continues to perform well and is projected to secure the third spot with earnings surpassing $12 million after crossing the $200 million mark globally last week.
Final box office numbers will be updated on Sunday morning, reflecting the performance of these films in the competitive late-summer market.
