A record number of visitors will descend upon staycation hotspots as they prepare for the long Easter weekend amid a forecast of sunshine and temperatures around 20C. According to holiday home rental agency Sykes Holiday Cottages, bookings to its UK holiday lets are up 75 per cent for the bank holiday weekend compared to 2019.
More people are booking last-minute, according to the study. The company revealed that bookings made for Easter weekend in the four weeks leading up to it have increased by 122 per cent compared to the same period in 2019. Most popular locations for Easter getaways include Whitby, Ambleside and Bowness-on-Windermere, while Weymouth and Carbis Bay round up the top five most-booked spots for the weekend ahead.
The staycation boom shows no signs of slowing down for summer either, with bookings for autumn 2022 already up by 35 per cent compared to 2019. Graham Donoghue, chief executive at Sykes Holiday Cottages, said: “Spurred on by the promise of an April heatwave, more Brits than ever have made last-minute bookings for the upcoming Easter weekend.
“Hotspot locations like the North York coast or Lake District continue to see the most demand, with many getting their walking boots or swimming costumes at the ready as they prepare to soak up the sunshine this bank holiday weekend.
"And who can blame them when our beautiful country has so much to offer - something that many have been able to rediscover in lockdown leading to this soaring demand for UK breaks which is showing no signs of slowing down.”
