Targett exposed, Lascelles struggled: Man City 5-0 Newcastle United player ratings

Eddie Howe's Newcastle suffered a bruising 5-0 defeat to Manchester City as Pep Guardiola's side bounced back from their Champions League defeat to Real Madrid. Newcastle had the first real chance of the game, when Chris Wood met Allan Saint-Maximin's cross but could only head straight at Ederson in the City goal.

Aymerick Laporte went close for the hosts almost immediately after in what was a close opening period. Joao Cancelo then met Kevin de Bruyne's far-post cross but steered the ball wide.

City took the lead on 18 minutes when Gundogan's pass opened up the Newcastle defence and Raheem Sterling turned home Cancelo's knockdown. Newcastle did have the ball in the back of the net when Jamaal Lascelles' header from corner hit Bruno Guimaraes and was poked him by Chris Wood, but the Brazilian midfielder was in an offside position.

The home side doubled their lead just before the break when Dubravka couldn't gather a corner, and Laporte turned the ball home following Dias' challenge on the United keeper.

Newcastle struggled for possession early in the second half, but created a good opportunity which saw Bruno fire well over. But City made it 3-0 on the hour mark, again from a corner, this time Rodri heading home at the near post.

Eddie Howe brought on Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier for Chris Wood and Emil Krafth as the pair got some much-needed gametime after lengthy injuries. And it was Wilson who had the chance to pull one back after being played in by Jacob Murphy, only for Ederson to save with his feet. Phil Foden rubbed salt into the wounds with a late goal, turning home Zincheko's shot from close range. Sterling then made it 5-0 after Grealish played him in as City scored twice in injjury-time.

Here's how Lee Ryder rated the Newcastle players.

Martin Dubravka 5

Faced 21 goal attempts. An error for the second goal and left badly exposed for others. But even two keepers wouldn't have stopped City today.

Emil Krafth 5

Has had a good run in the team. But struggled against a world class City side. That said two goals came down his side after he'd been subbed.

Jamaal Lascelles 4

Struggled against a world class frontline.

Dan Burn 5

Has been fantastic since arriving but this was a tough afternoon.

Matt Targett 4

Tried both fair means and foul to stop Sterling. Perhaps let down by lack of cover in front of him?

Joelinton 5

Battled hard against stellar midfield cast.

Bruno Guimaraes 6

Probably the pick of the midfield. Six tackles and had a couple of sights of goal.

Sean Longstaff 5

Handed a tough assignment amid contract talks. Did not manage a key pass.

Allan Saint-Maximin 6

Crossed well for Wood in the first half. At least made chances but left gaps in front of Targett.

Miguel Almiron 4

Not much impact. Slightly better after poor first half. No surprise to see him hooked.

Chris Wood 5

On a day when chances were always going to be at a premium, missed a golden opportunity to put Newcastle a goal up. Given City's class all round it's hard to say it would have changed the final outcome of the afternoon.

Subs

Kieran Trippier 5 (for Krafth 68)

Still getting back on track fitness wise. This won't do him any harm on that score.

Callum Wilson 6 (for Wood 68)

Offered a threat at least. One shot saved by Ederson.

Jacob Murphy (for Almiron 80)

*Subs must play 15 minutes.
