Las Vegas Strip Brings On a Sport's Most Expensive Event

Las Vegas has become one of the nation's top destinations for major sporting events, and the evidence is clear with the country's most popular sports extravaganza, Super Bowl LVIII, scheduled to be played at Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11, 2024.

It helped that Las Vegas welcomed National Football League's Raiders to town in 2020, which was the key to landing the Super Bowl.

New expansion major league sports franchises and teams are also looking to relocate in Las Vegas. The arrival of the National Hockey League's Vegas Golden Knights in 2017 was remarkable as the expansion team reached the Stanley Cup Finals in their first year only to lose to the Washington Capitals four games to one.

March Madness Coming to Las Vegas

The NCAA is bringing March Madness to Las Vegas for the first time after it in 2020 awarded the city the 2023 Men's Basketball West Regional at T-Mobile Arena and the Men's Final Four in 2028 at Allegiant Stadium.

The NCAA men's basketball conference tournaments have taken the court in Sin City for years, including the Pac-12 men's basketball tournament, which arrived at MGM Resorts International's (MGM) MGM Grand on the Strip in March 2013 before moving to the new T-Mobile Arena in 2017. The Mountain West, West Coast, Western Athletic Conference and Big West tournaments have also made their way to Vegas over the years..

Sin City is also working to bring a Major League Baseball team to Southern Nevada as the Oakland A's have set their sights on the Las Vegas Strip and have been talking with Circus Circus owner Phil Ruffin about building a stadium at the Las Vegas festival grounds site adjacent to Circus Circus. They have also considered Bally Corp's Tropicana Las Vegas property.

And now, auto racing looks to make its mark on Las Vegas with an expensive new event.

Las Vegas Grand Prix is a Very Expensive Race

The Formula 1 Heineken Silver Las Vegas Grand Prix, which rolls into Sin City Nov. 16-18, will be the most expensive F1 Grand Prix race on this season's circuit based on ticket prices and hotel rates during the event, according to a study by KingCasinoBonus.uk.

The average combined cost of a ticket and hotel room is estimated at £5,849 or about $7,035, according to the study. Tickets for the race ranging from $500 for a 3-day general admission, standing room only ticket to $2,000 for a 3-day SG3 or SG8 Grandstand or $2,500 for the PG1 Grandstand, all with food and non-alcoholic beverages included in the grandstands, are currently unavailable, according to the Las Vegas Grand Prix website.

Las Vegas Grand Prix currently has all ages tickets available for the PH1 Skybox Shared Hospitality East Harmon Zone, with all inclusive premium food and beverages, for $10,000 each, and 3-day all ages tickets for the North and South Koval Zones, with all inclusive premium food and beverages, for $8,000 each.

Accommodations will be pricey for the days surrounding the event, ranging from £124 or about $149 for a hostel bed to a 4- or 5-star hotel room at about £1,240 or $1,491 for three nights, the study said.

The second highest priced Grand Prix event is at the Miami Grand Prix on May 5-7 with an average cost of £3,817 or $4,591 for the weekend, KingCasinoBonus said. General admission tickets are £488 or $587 up to Champions Club 3-day packages at £5,786 or $6,959. Hostel beds in Miami also are priced at £124 or about $149 and a 4-star hotel in Miami Beach is around £1,237 or $1,488.
