Large hail and lightning strikes as storm front moves across north-west Victoria

Victoria's State Emergency Service is urging people to stay off the roads during storms as wild weather moves in from the west.

There have been dozens of lightning strikes between Mildura and Portland in the past few hours, while Horsham and Nhill both received more than 14 millimetres of rain in less than half an hour this afternoon.

SES crews have been responding to building damage and flash flooding in Horsham and Dimboola.

Hailstones up to five centimetres in diameter lashed Mildura.

There have been more than 70 calls for assistance to the SES statewide in the past 12 hours, mostly related to fallen trees down or roof damage in western Victoria.

Power is out to more than 1,100 properties, with major outages in Irymple near Mildura and Crossley near Warrnambool.

PowerCor said the electricity would remain out until at least 9pm.

A severe weather warning remains in place for Bendigo, Horsham, Echuca, Maryborough, Castlemaine and Kyneton.

SES Grampians Community Resilience Coordinator Claire Mintern is urging people not to drive unless absolutely necessary.

"It's quite dangerous during these severe thunderstorms," she said.

"If you do need to be on the roads please drive safely.

"We are expecting there to be more blackouts as the thunderstorms come across Victoria."

The Bureau of Meteorology says storms will move eastwards this evening and is predicting more than 20mm of rain to fall across Victoria's eastern ranges on Thursday and more than 10mm elsewhere.

The bureau is also warning the Loddon and Avoca Rivers in the north-west, as well as the Upper Murray and other rivers in Victoria's east, could reach minor flood levels by Tuesday morning, given the catchments are saturated as a result of rainfall in recent months.
