Land Rover has revealed four military variants of the Defender Wolf Series II ahead of their public showing at the British Army DVD 2026 event at the Millbrook proving ground in Bedfordshire on September 16 and 17. It is the first military Wolf built on the current Defender generation.
The vehicle drops the ladder-frame setup used by the original Wolf and switches to the monocoque D7x architecture that underpins the civilian Defender lineup. JLR says the design has been through roughly 62,000 tests, and the new machine is aimed squarely at a British Army contract worth serious money to whoever wins it.

Defender Wolf Series II Military Range In The UK
The Wolf nameplate goes back to the late 1990s, part of a run of Land Rover-based defense vehicles stretching about 70 years. Series II marks a clean break. It is the first Wolf built around the current Defender's body rather than the older ladder-frame trucks British forces have run for decades.
Building the new Wolf on D7x monocoque construction is not a small engineering decision. It means the military variant shares its basic underpinnings with the same platform underneath the civilian Defender, including the Defender Octa off-road model and the rally-bred Defender Dakar D7XR.
JLR says the Wolf Series II has been designed and engineered in the UK and validated using the same Extreme Event Test procedures applied to its road-going models. The company puts it plainly: "This design was the only one to have successfully navigated all obstacles thrown at it."
A Defender Defence Division is already in place as a dedicated arm to engage directly with military and other government customers instead of routing everything through the regular Land Rover commercial structure.
Four Variants, One Live Tender
The four trucks heading to Millbrook cover distinct jobs. There is a tactical mobility vehicle, a general mobility vehicle, an ambulance, and a utility vehicle. Each is built to move troops, equipment, or casualties, the core roles any light military 4x4 has to handle.
All four are aimed at the UK Ministry of Defence's Light Mobility Vehicle tender, an active competition for orders under the wider Land Mobility Programme. The formal notice calls for nine variants from a common base platform, with industry trials due to start in late October 2026.
JLR is not alone in chasing it. Team Grenadier is fielding militarised Grenadier variants, while other groups are pitching GM-based Colorado and Infantry Squad Vehicle derivatives, a Toyota Land Cruiser 70 logistics family, and a Ford Ranger-based architecture for the same MoD requirement.
JLR has not disclosed full testing details or every competitor in the running for the Light Mobility Vehicle deal. More specifics on the four Wolf Series II variants are expected at DVD 2026, including how the platform's civilian roots, shared with vehicles like the upcoming 2027 Defender Dakar, translate into a truck built for a battlefield rather than a trailhead.
