Police have launched an investigation after a Lanarkshire building was deliberately set alight.

The blaze started late in the evening of Saturday, October 22, with emergency crews rushing to the scene in The Glebe area of Bothwell.

Four fire engines were seen rushing to the area with crews fighting the inferno which took place at around 7.40pm, in a building which is said to be derelict, reports Lanarkshire Live.

The area was made safe after the fire was extinguished and there have been no injuries reported as a result.

Nearby residents were able to see the blaze from as far as the motorway with some reporting it was spotted while driving on the M74 and roads closer to the area in Bothwell.

One local who saw the fire said: "I saw this from the motorway about 10 min ago. Gasped at the size of it. I really hope no one is hurt."

Another added: "Not being occupied for quite a while but has had regular intruders."

A third, also shocked by the blaze, told: "I’m so glad no one has been hurt. The house has been empty for many years. I feel for the houses either side."

Cops have now launched an investigation to understand the full circumstances of how the incident started on Saturday night.

A Police Scotland source said: “Around 7.50pm on Saturday, we received a report of a fire at a premises at The Glebe, Bothwell.

“It is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.”

The building is located at the east side of the Glebe near to Bothwell Parish Church.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were alerted at 7.39pm on Saturday - we mobilised four fire appliances and firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.

"There were no reported causalities and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe."
