Lanarkshire primary school forced to close for the day

A Lanarkshire school has been forced to unexpectedly close for the day.

South Lanarkshire Council posted on social media that Newton Farm Primary, in Cambuslang, would be unable to open today due to a burst pipe.

The school had already informed parents they would not be opening until 10am, but have now stated they will not be able to provide any classes today at all.

The South Lanarkshire Council Facebook post read: "Newton Farm Primary and Nursery will be closed today, Thursday 19 January, due to a burst pipe."

Some parents were unimpressed at the amount of time it took to confirm the closure.

One wrote: "I hope the kids that got the bus were warm enough while they were waiting to see if they could stay at school. And now having to wait to see if their parents are able to come for them quickly."

Another added: "Shocking making parents wait till this time to announce!"

The local authority had previously said that heating issues had meant it would be a 10am start.

Scotland is currently gripped by freezing temperatures, with warnings for snow and ice in parts of the country.

The cold snap is expected to ease by the weekend, with milder temperatures expected, along with wind and rain.
