Lanarkshire politicians pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II who has died

Politicians from across Lanarkshire have paid their respects following the sad news of the Queen's passing last night.

Elected members from across the region took to social media to offer their condolences and respects to the Royal Family, who had congregated at the Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire following Her Majesty's death.

Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley said: "Can I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family on the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

"This is a profoundly sad moment, as we reflect and admire an extraordinary life of dedicated service.

“One of her first engagements as Queen nearly 70 years ago was to visit Hamilton so she will always have an affiliation with my constituency and the people of Hamilton.

“Many people, myself included, have not known a time when there was a different monarch such was her longevity. It is unlikely that there will ever be another to reign for so long.

"I will be in Parliament this weekend to pay tribute and my thoughts are with the Royal Family at this difficult time."

Whilst Stephanie Callaghan, MSP for Uddingston and Bellshill said: "At this time, I remember the Queen’s tireless dedication to her role and unerring sense of duty.

"For seven decades, the Queen was a constant presence in the lives of people across the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and wider world.

"I extend my deepest sympathies to The King and his family, and all who loved her."

And Collette Stevenson, MSP for East Kilbride, posted: "My heartfelt condolences go out to the King and the Royal Family on the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. My thoughts and prayers are with all the family at what is a very sad time.

"We are now in a period of national mourning and as a mark of respect my office will be closed until the day after the State Funeral."

Clare Haughey, MSP for Rutherglen, said: "The death of the Queen is profoundly sad. She was a constant in all of our lives - living through the most defining periods of our modern history. Her life was one of public service and devotion, from beginning to end."

Dr Lisa Cameron, MP for East Kilbride added: "My thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family at this most difficult time.

"I had the privilege of meeting Her Majesty in my role as Chair of the Disability Group in Parliament and I recall she was very focused on what could be done to help the most vulnerable throughout our brief conversation, encapsulating her dedication and unwavering commitment to others."

Clydesdale MP David Mundell also paid tribute to Her Majesty the Queen on the news of her death.

He said: "Over her seven decades as our monarch, Queen Elizabeth II was a constant, steadying presence in the life of the nation.

“She set an exemplary standard for personal behaviour and over the 70 years of her reign was the ultimate symbol of what it means to be British.

“Her unstinting and unwavering service through good times and bad was an inspiration to so many of us here at home and across the world.

"She was at all times a faultless ambassador for our country.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the Royal Family at this saddest of times.”
