Lanarkshire man jailed after sexual assault on woman at lockdown party

A man who sexually assaulted an off-duty police officer at a lockdown party in his Hamilton home, has been jailed for two years.

Andrew McNally was also put on the sex offenders' register for 10 years at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

The 35-year-old denied committing the offence at his home in Shaw Drive in June last year, but a jury found him guilty.

The court heard that the victim, who was known to McNally, was at the house that day.

Defence advocate Graham Robertson asked Sheriff Liam Murphy to be as lenient as possible, given his client's previous "good character".

The lawyer stated: "It's evident from background reports that he does not present any meaningful or significant risk to the public.

"He is assessed as being at low risk of future sexual offending.

"On this occasion it seems alcohol played some part, but it would appear alcohol and drugs are not significant elements in this man's life.

"I would suggest a non-custodial sentence is at least worthy of consideration."

However, Sheriff Liam Murphy told McNally: "It's clear from the victim's evidence and her written statement that this has had a significant impact on her life.

"Given the gravity of the offence, custody is necessary."
