Lanarkshire man cleared of slashing partner

A man was cleared this week of a knife attack on his partner at his Blantyre home.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that the victim needed stitches in a serious wound to her ear.

Mark Brown, of Camelon Crescent, was accused of assaulting her to her severe injury and permanent disfigurement on January 8 last year.

However, a jury returned a majority not guilty verdict after trial.

The victim said she fled the house after Brown, 53, lashed out with a knife and threatened to kill her.

But Brown, a forensic psychology student, denied the allegation and claimed the injury must have been caused when she fell after drinking.

The court heard the couple had been consuming alcohol together on the night of the alleged attack.

Defence agent Gerry McGuire said the woman could give no reason why Brown should suddenly "turn into some kind of maniac" and attack her.

Brown claimed his partner wasn't injured when he went to bed and suggested she fell at some point later.

Mr McGuire pointed out that police found no traces of blood on any knives in the house.

He also referred to a blood-soaked pillow, saying that contradicted the victim's claim that she left the house after being assaulted and didn't return that night.

Mr McGuire told the jury: "She's making up a story. She injured herself and blames Mr Brown."
