Lanarkshire hospital finds Legionnaires' bacteria in water supply

Bacteria that can cause the potentially fatal Legionnaires' disease has been discovered in the water supply of a Lanarkshire hospital.

Legionella bacteria has been found in the hot water system of a building at University Hospital Monklands in Airdrie. NHS Lanarkshire has said the bacteria is isolated in the hot water system.

Filters are now being fitted to hot water taps and shower outlets by engineers to limit the spread of the infection until it dies out, the Daily Record reports. But health chiefs are insisting the bacteria does not pose a threat to patient safety or to the quality of drinking water, which comes from a different source.
