Lanarkshire gym to take on Tough Mudder challenge fundraiser for charity

A Cambuslang gym is raising money for charity by taking part in an extreme obstacle course.

Members from Energie Fitness gym will take part in Tough Mudder, the infamous fast-paced 15km obstacle course.

The course is coming to Drumlanrig Castle, Thornhill, on Saturday, July 2, and Sunday July 3 - and gym staff and members can't wait to test themselves against its elements.

Club manager Thomas Starmore told Lanarkshire Live : “It was one of the members, Gordon Horne, who chose to do Tough Mudder - he’s taken part in it twice already.

“I’ve been training him for over two years for his wedding in January and this seemed like the natural next step. It’s been a life goal for me to take part in Tough Mudder, so it all came into place at the right time.

“There are four of us taking part, Gordon, myself, personal trainer Laura Park, and one of our friends, Brad Crees.”

The group are hoping to raise as much money as possible for the Carers Trust Scotland, the charity that raises money to support carers looking after vulnerable people.

Thomas added: “The Carers Trust charity was chosen by Gordon. His dad has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and he wants to give back to the carers who have given so much to help not only his dad but his whole family.

“They do incredible selfless work but are both unpaid and underfunded as a body compared to anyone else within their field.

“Also our team member Laura recently did a charity event for carers again as one of her close family members went through terrible medical issues and the support they provided her was amazing.

“Sadly almost every family will have someone who is in need of carers and anything we can do to support them and highlight their work is so helpful.

“Everyone is excited for the challenge, but the togetherness from not only our team but everyone taking part.

“Our training is focusing on body weight and grip strength. This involves pull-ups, chin ups with different rep ranges and tempos as well as heavy deadlifts and farmers walks to improve our grip strength.

“There is also a major focus on our endurance and fitness, this has included exercises done in higher rep ranges (10-15) as well as a lot of outdoor running and cycling.

“We have been cycling to and from Balloch multiple times to get our legs prepared for a full day of exercise.”
