Lanarkshire couple to host health classes in brand new community centre

A Lanarkshire couple has set up a new community centre offering a host of new classes.

Jerrica Lee and her partner Liam Tan created the Tempo community centre as they wanted to build a social hub that could support businesses and social enterprises in Rutherglen.

The couple began developing the centre right before the Covid-19 pandemic and carried out most of the work themselves to be able to get classes up and running.

Jerrica told Lanarkshire Live: “The process of starting the centre was, to be honest, very difficult, especially when we had a lot of other things going on, but we had the support from friends and family which we appreciate a lot.

“We had the opportunity to meet and work with lots of talented and like-minded partners which have helped us grow. We're excited about the future, to create and bring more to the community.”

Jerrica, who is originally from Inverness and Liam from Montrose, have found the process rewarding and are now excited for all the upcoming classes in the hub.

She added: “Currently, we have Julianne from JA Academy of Dance and Technique offering various styles in choreography and techniques (every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday), and art classes hosted by Rebecca Scott weekly (Wednesday).

“The class we're running this weekend on Sunday, July 24, Tempo Flow, might be something we do on a regular basis, but may look for different partners to host this to create more variety and promote more businesses. This is split into three different aspects of health focusing on mobility, cardio, breathing and relaxation.

“As we're still developing the space, we're in the process of looking for more partners to host classes and workshops in the studio. We want to give others the opportunity to run and test out their business here as we know it can be difficult to get that support.

“In the future, we hope to create more opportunities for others by either supporting them in their business or their health and wellbeing. We're always looking for new ideas and partners to work with in the space, as we believe by supporting each other we can all grow.

"Some of the projects we're working on to set up are a community garden, open studio, recording studio, gym and creative workspaces. We're looking to also set up more classes for kids and adults focusing on health and mental wellbeing.”
