The keys to the iconic Bothwell Library building have been handed over to a community trust following a successful asset deal.
Bothwell Futures have officially completed the purchase and taken over the premises from South Lanarkshire Council through a community asset transfer supported by the Scottish Land Fund.
The library will now be revamped into a multifunctional community hub with extensive repairs and renovation works starting this summer.
These works will include repairs to the roofing and windows, with better access for disabled people also being installed.
The main library space and some of the back-office rooms will be developed, with a new staircase and modern toilets also due to be built.
The move promises to pave the way for the future of Bothwell residents and provide a free social space for younger generations.
Kevin Moore, chair of Bothwell Futures told Lanarkshire Live : "We are delighted to bring this iconic and crucial building back into the ownership of the community.
"Many people have been involved in this process and without naming anyone specifically I would like to thank each and everyone for their contribution.
"When we started the community asset transfer process with SLC and SLLC we were told by everyone that it would take two years to complete, but with great collaboration from the council executive and councillors, we have undertaken and completed this transfer within eight months.
"We have nothing but great praise for all within these two organisations.”
The project is expected to be completed by November, with further plans to extend the space by 3,000 square feet.
Kevin added: "Bothwell Futures has listened to our community and we are focused on delivering what they want. Bothwell is very short of non-commercial community space and this first phase starts the process of correcting that."
Helen Singleton from Bothwell Futures told us : "We are projecting to have all the work completed and back in action within the Hub by the end of this year.
"This is one of the most exciting projects I have worked on, and we are determined to deliver for our people."
