Re David Cameron’s return to government as foreign secretary (Report, 13 November), he should be remembered for two major policies. First, austerity, which left the public realm so damaged. His recent evidence to the Covid enquiry showed that he has learned nothing. And second, enabling us to leave Europe, having failed to negotiate an adequate agreement with the EU, thus leaving the country to the Tory chaos of the last seven years. A brilliant appointment, Rishi Sunak.

• I marched for peace on Saturday. I was anxious, but convinced of the need to demonstrate my horror at the actions of Hamas and the imperative to stop the bombing in Gaza. Sometimes we need to stand up and be counted. This was made possible by the work of the Metropolitan police, which provided an excellent and sensitive service. Thank you to Sir Mark Rowley for showing leadership at this time (‘He will not be bullied’: Met chief Mark Rowley not afraid to stand his ground, 11 November).

• I too am from the north, and we were given the choice of either sugar or condensed milk sandwiches when money was scarce (Letters, 9 November). We thought of them as a treat then, but I shudder now.

• Those living in the Shetland Islands may have the highest life satisfaction (Report, 7 November), but they are also more likely to be murdered. I know, I’ve watched all eight series of Shetland on the BBC.
