Renaud Kuppens and Holger Harmsen are the 2024 Lamborghini Super Trofeo Champions in the AM and LAMBORGHINI CUP classes, at the end of a second race full of action and incidents at Jerez which was won by the all-American pairing of McGee/McIntosh.
The first major upset came right at the start, when Piergiacomo Randazzo made contact with Shota Abkhazava and the VSR driver suffered damage to the front right bodywork, while the Georgian from ART-Line had a spin, dropping to the back of the group.
The first Safety Car came out when Haziq Zairel Oh (HZO Fortis Racing Team) went into the gravel, wiping out any advantage that poleman Paolo Biglieri had managed to gain over Kuppens and Anthony McIntosh, the Italian trying once again to extend his lead at the restart.
Just before the pit-stop window there was another incident: in the midfield battles, Nattanid Leewattanavalagul ended up in a spin exiting turn 5, causing chaos among those behind. Abkhazava lifted off seeing the YK team driver pirouette and behind him Anthony Bullock hit him, going airborne for a few meters, landing badly and remaining stuck along the track.
There was a Full Course Yellow while the pit stops were being made and the luck ran out for Biglieri, who after handing over to Petar Matic saw his ST slow with an alternator problem, meaning a sad end to the race for the ASR duo.
Glenn McGee inherited the wheel from McIntosh and came out ahead of Kuppens, who in this position was guaranteed of being able to clinch the title, also because a further SC was decreed a handful of minutes from the end to recover Vincent Tai (Arrows Racing) from the gravel at turn 4, while Adrian Kunzle (MLT) ended up spinning a little further ahead.
The Safety Car came out just in time to leave everyone on a parade lap to the chequered flag, with McGee/McIntosh winning ahead of Kuppens, who was crowned AM Champion by the 1 point he earned thanks to the Pole, while things went badly for Guerin/Hurgon and the two Lewandowskis, who found themselves with a 30s penalty for overtaking under SC conditions, losing 3rd and 4th place.
Garrett Adams (Ansa Motorsport) thus climbed onto the overall podium, followed by the PPM STs in the hands of David Staab and Dominic Starkweather, with Lemeret/Gillion (CMR) ahead of Huilin Han (Target Racing).
Doyle/Harrison (WTR Andretti) and Locanto/Valkre (DL Racing) were in eighth and ninth position, while the overall Top 10 also included Harmsen (GT3 Poland), the comfortable winner of the LC Class with accompanying title.
The podium for this last LC race was completed by Nicholas Groat (One Motorsports) and Donovan and Luciano Privitelio (Rexal Villorba Corse).
