LaLiga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have announced the introduction of a new signal for referees to use in response to racist behavior during matches in Spain. This signal can be activated by the main referee upon personally witnessing such behavior or being informed of it by a player or stadium security personnel.
The RFEF emphasized their commitment to combating discrimination in football, particularly racist attitudes and behaviors, by implementing this global and unmistakable gesture across all competitions. While protocols against racism, xenophobia, and intolerance in football were established in 2005, this new referee signal, specifically for racist incidents, represents a significant step forward in the ongoing fight against racism. This comprehensive approach includes not only rules and sanctions but also focuses on raising awareness and promoting education to address all forms of discrimination.
In recent years, the issue of racism in Spanish football has gained prominence, with Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior frequently facing abuse from opposing fans. The 24-year-old player recently stated that his teammates were prepared to leave the field in response to any racist abuse directed at him during matches. Earlier this year, three fans were sentenced to jail for directing racist abuse at Vinícius during a LaLiga game in May 2023, marking a significant legal precedent in Spain as acknowledged by LaLiga.
