Growing up as Burmese-Australian in a regional town, artist Shân Primrose says her upbringing could be called a 'dog's breakfast'.
That's the name of her artwork at Lake Macquarie's Museum of Art and Culture, yapang, on display from Friday August 9.
"So it has a lot of motifs and themes about like AFL, VB and Australian culture and Burmese culture, like traditional food," Primrose said.
"It's called dog's breakfast because my cultural background is really messy and complex," she said.
Primrose said colourful motifs and themes in her art reflected identity, family, Burmese and Australian cultural practices, religion, sport and nostalgia.
"My art is an extension of self and it's my way to show what I was feeling to the world," she said.
Primrose will join 18 other local artists at the MAC yapang's Alternating the Cube exhibition from Friday August 9 to October 13.
MAC yapang curator Jasmine Kean said the exhibit would showcase artists who ran their own artist spaces throughout the Hunter region.
"This exhibition is a rare opportunity to see these diverse talents come together in one place," Ms Kean said.
"It will investigate how models of the 'artist run space' are a distinct alternative to the art institution. These models are a crucial step for many artists to gain critique, grow and contribute to their field," she said.
Fresh off a collaboration with Australian fashion brand Dangerfield, Primrose said she was "honoured" to be involved in the local exhibit.
"The whole exhibition is about alternative ways to access the art world," she said.
Other artists featured include: Dino Consalvo, Virginia Cuppaidge, Michelle Gearin, Ellie Hannon, Holly Leonardson, Jaymie Maley, Patrick Mavety, Dan Nelson, Olivia Parsonage, Brett Piva, Braddon Snape, Melody Suranyi, Michelle Teear, Lezlie Tilley, Meg Walters, Ahn Wells and Graham Wilson.
Lake Macquarie City Council said the community is invited to meet the artists at the exhibition opening on Friday August 9 between 6 to 8pm.
