Lady Victoria Hervey criticised Netflix smash hit The Crown during an appearance on Good Morning Britain on Friday morning.
The fifth season of show is set to detail the breakdown of King Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage when it drops on the streaming platform next month.
However, the decision not to postpone the series has been criticised as it comes weeks after the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the King’s own accession to the throne.
Lady Victoria Hervey weighed in on the discussion during an appearance on ITV ’s Friday instalment of Good Morning Britain.
She said: “ Netflix says that it’s fiction and it’s not reality. That’s the whole argument with this new series, but a lot of people watching it actually see it as a documentary.
“They don’t see it as fiction. The outside story is real, but the inside story is all made up. I think that’s what they’re going to be doing with this.”
She continued: “I think it is insensitive. I think it is a little bit too soon. The Queen’s death was only a month ago.
“Especially with the coronation coming up and Camilla, everyone is really accepting her in her role right now and I think it’s going to be trying to paint her in a negative light.”
Host Ben Shephard replied: “You could understand why Camilla particularly might be thinking, ‘why dredge that up when time has moved on?’
“And also, we understand that it doesn’t paint the new King in a particularly good light.”
However, writer Dr Tessa Dunlop disagreed with Lady Victoria, stressing that the show is ‘just historical drama’.
She said: “Netflix has never pretended this is anything but fiction. Yes, it walks the line.
“Sometimes I agree it’s not particularly tasteful – I preferred the earlier series – but I think to even countenance the idea of postponing it is extraordinary.
“How much more reverence do our Royal family need? The Queen, understandably, had an extraordinary send-odd. We gave her more than 10 days of mourning, when virtually not one word of criticism was said.
“How long will this go on for? We’re not even talking about the Queen, we’re talking about Charles. He has all the extraordinary props of monarchy to help him in his new role. If there’s a little bit of art that’s uncomfortable, so be it.”
The Crown’s fifth season debuts on Netflix on November 9.
