Huge concrete barriers have been put up on a major bridge in Nottingham after a lorry plunged down an embankment. Lady Bay Bridge, one of just three River Trent crossings in and out of the city, is expected to remain closed for weeks or even months after the incident.
A lorry crashed off the bridge on Monday, July 4 and highways officials from Nottinghamshire County Council have now warned there could be disruption for months to come. Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the driver of the skip lorry suffered injuries which are not believed to life altering or life threatening at this stage.
As of the morning of Thursday, July 7 large concrete barriers have been put up in the middle of the road to secure the gap in the safety barriers where the vehicle tumbled from. It is understood one side may be able to reopen sooner and this development points positively towards this potential eventuality.
The bridge is just one of three in the city, including Trent Bridge and Clifton Bridge. Travel chaos ensued after the closure on Monday, prompting comparisons with the 600-day long closure of Clifton Bridge a few years back.
Nottinghamshire County Councillor Neil Clarke, Transport and Environment Committee chairman, says: "I am afraid it will be affected for many weeks. It could be into a few months, possibly. Obviously, we're still slightly in the unknown until a full assessment has been made."
It's expected to remain partially closed for weeks, if not months. Heavy traffic has been reported in the area of London Road and Trent Bridge on Thursday, July 7.
