Seven mine workers in Madhya Pradesh's Panna district have found a 17.96-carat diamond at a mine in Sarkoha village, raising hopes of a major financial turnaround for their families, as per a NBT report. The gemstone is estimated to be worth more than Rs 50 lakh, although its exact value will be determined through a government auction.
The workers had been earning their livelihood through daily wage labour. The discovery has given them an opportunity to address long-standing financial difficulties and work towards fulfilling their personal and family aspirations.
Diamond found during rain
The discovery took place at a mine being operated in Sarkoha village. The seven workers were inspecting the mine during rainfall when leaseholder Akhilesh Pal noticed something shining among the soil.
On closer inspection, the object was identified as a diamond. News of the discovery quickly spread through the village and surrounding areas, bringing excitement among the workers and local residents.
Value to be decided through auction
According to estimates from experts and the diamond office, the 16.96-carat stone could be worth more than ₹50 lakh. However, its final value will only be established after the government auction.
Under the applicable process, government royalty will be deducted from the proceeds of the auction. The remaining amount will then be divided equally among the seven partners working at the mine.
Three workers hope to get married
The discovery has brought particular relief to the families of Santosh, Sharman and Arun, who are aged between about 30 and 38 and have been unable to marry because of financial difficulties.
The three workers hope their share of the proceeds from the diamond sale will help them move forward with their plans to start families.
The seven partners have said the discovery is the result of their collective effort and hard work. Since all seven were working together at the mine, the proceeds remaining after the royalty deduction will be shared equally.
Families plan to build homes, support children's education
The workers have also begun planning how to use their expected earnings. Their priorities include replacing their existing houses with permanent homes and providing better education for their children.
The 17.96-carat diamond has been deposited under security at the government diamond office in Panna. It will be auctioned after the required legal and administrative procedures are completed.
