Labour to table confidence vote which could trigger general election

The Labour Party will today trigger a vote of no confidence in the current Government and if enough people vote with them the move could trigger a general election. The vote will be held tomorrow in the House of Commons after it was announced that Boris Johnson will stay Prime Minister until September 5.

Labour said it would table the motion if Mr Johnson, who has resigned as leader of the Conservatives, was not removed from office more quickly, reports Sky News.

Mr Johnnson resigned as leader after dozens of MPs said they no longer had confidence in him as Prime Minister and ministers quit their Government roles. But if those same MPs now formally voted to say they have no confidence in the Prime Minister that could trigger a general election.

He will stay on as Prime Minister until a new Conservative Party leader is chosen by members of the party on September 5.
