The Labor Department's Office of Inspector General has served subpoenas on nine major research universities, including Harvard and Yale, in an investigation into how the schools use J-1 exchange visitor visas for researchers. Vice President JD Vance and Inspector General Anthony P. D'Esposito announced the probe at a White House event on Oct. 8, and the inspector general's office issued a formal press release the next day.
The universities named are the University of Pittsburgh, Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Brown, UC Davis, Caltech, Arizona State University, and MIT. Together they run some of the country's largest federally funded research programs, including laboratories that train postdoctoral scientists.
