'Laapataa Ladies', India’s official entry to Oscars 2025 crashed out of the race on Wednesday, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced its shortlist for the Best International Feature Film category. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film is a quirky comedy set in rural India and revolves around the chaos that ensues after two young brides go missing on a train journey. The film was unable to capture the attention of the Academy voters and earn a spot on the shortlist along with other International features like 'I’m Still Here' (Brazil), 'Universal Language' (Canada), 'The Seed of the Sacred Fig' (Germany), 'Kneecap' (Ireland), 'Vermiglio' (Italy), 'Flow' (Latvia) and 'Dahomey' (Senegal).
After 'Laapataa Ladies' failed to make the cut, film enthusiasts and fans took to their social media handles to reignite the debate surrounding the selection process and slam India's Oscar selection committee for snubbing Payal Kapadia's 'All We Imagine As Light'. The film which was allegedly snubbed as it was 'not Indian enough', had netizens slamming the 'missed opportunity' at scoring a win at the awards show.
