Cincinnati Bengals rookie guard Cordell Volson has a serious shot at winning the starting gig on the left side of the line over the next few weeks.
Buy Bengals TicketsVolson will get the starter’s share of work against the Giants in Week 2 of the preseason with Jackson Carman being one of the line’s many injury issues right now.
And it sure doesn’t hurt that he’s got guys like right tackle La’el Collins in his corner.
Collins, just getting into the swing of things himself after battling a nagging injury, told Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer that Volson is quite the rookie:
Bengals RT La’el Collins, who said today was a big step in his ramp up process, called rookie LG Cordell Volson “one of the best rookies I’ve been around.”
He praised Volson’s toughness, physicality, coachability and willingness to learn.

That’s huge praise from Collins, who has been seen at camp working extra on the side with Volson, even if he himself wasn’t suited up.
None of this means Carman is out of the running for the job at left guard. But it’s clear Volson’s starting to gain some serious momentum and has the attention of teammates.
