Kynren seeks volunteers to join the UK’s biggest live action show

Outdoor spectacular Kynren is on the look-out for volunteers to take part in next year's showcase event.

The organiser, 11Arches Park, will be hosting an open call at its site in County Durham on November 16 for volunteers to join its cast and crew. And there will be a huge range of roles available to fill, including some for children as young as five.

Billed as the UK’s biggest live action show, Kynren has won awards and attracted audiences UK-wide to its specially-created 7.5-acre outdoor stage in Bishop Auckland which is set against the backdrop of Auckland Castle.

The show covers 2,000 years of English history, told through set pieces full of drama, stunts and special effects and the epic event also requires an epic-size team of around 1,000 cast and crew.

The open-call session is set to last around 90 minutes and will give prospective volunteers the chance to learn all about the opportunities available. They also will be able to take a behind-the-scenes look at the Kynren site, learn about the show itself and listen to team leaders to discover what's involved and what the commitment will entail.

Volunteers - or 'archers' as they can be known - are needed for teams involved in a range of Kynren experiences ranging from cavalry to the technical and operations teams.

Anne-Isabelle Daulon, chief executive officer and co-founder of 11Arches, said: “We’re looking to recruit great people of all ages, from five upwards, with a range of abilities and interests to join us on-stage or off-stage for next year’s show which is set to be the biggest and most spectacular ever.

“Becoming an 'archer' is like joining an extended family and becoming part of a vibrant community. Many archers make lifelong friendships, learn new skills and discover that they can achieve great things."

She added: “They are the heart and soul of 11Arches and Kynren. Quite simply, without them, we wouldn’t have our shows. Archers are involved in every aspect of the production."

Volunteers will receive professional training from experts in their respective fields including stage combat, choreography and pyrotechnics. And those who join for a volunteer season in 2023 will be the first to be notified about upcoming new paid roles which are expected to available from next September as the site prepares for a reopening in 2024 as a seasonal visitor attraction.

The open-call will take place on November 16 from 6.30pm-8pm at Flatts Farm, Toronto, Bishop Auckland. The postcode is DL14 7SF. Further open calls are set to follow in coming months.
