Kylie Minogue wins over new fans with latest hit Padam Padam

10 News First – Disclaimer

Kylie Minogue is back and her music is resonating with a whole new audience.

The Australian pop icon, who is beloved globally, is having a moment with her latest single Padam Padam sliding its way up the charts.

Right now, it is sitting at No.39 on the ARIA chart and at No.10 (and rising) on Billboard’s Hot Dance/Electronic Songs.

In the UK, Padam Padam is sitting at No.12, while it’s No.1 on the UK independent singles charts.

The lead single is from her upcoming album, Tension, which will be her 16th studio album and will be released in September.

A catchy dance track, Padam Padam is also her first big hit in the streaming age, finding popularity on TikTok.

Its almost hypnotic chorus lends itself well to the app and has spawned a dance trend, while also being memed.

On her birthday, Minogue shared an Instagram post where she thanked her fans for all the love she had been receiving since the song was released.

“My heart is bursting with joy,” she said.

‘Kylie Minogue, duh’

Over on TikTok, Padam Padam has spread like wildfire, becoming a top sound people have used for their videos.

People are dancing along to the choreography seen in the music video, with some even putting their own spin on it.

Managing to pull off the choreography alone is impressive, but British singer and actor Olly Alexander, with whom Minogue has collaborated in the past, shared a video of himself doing the moves while hula hooping.

“Just a gay guy in his 30s attempting the Padam choreo whilst hula hooping! Kylie Minogue I love you to the moon and back,” Alexander wrote on TikTok.

Even though the song has only been out for a few weeks, it has become something of a gay anthem.

Minogue recently headlined World Pride in Sydney.

In a TikTok video, where people were interviewed on the street, two men were asked what their favourite gay slang was.

Padam,” one of them replied.

The interviewer, Stan Chris, had no idea what “Padam” was. The men’s response? It’s “Kylie Minogue, duh”.

“It means being gay and having a good time,” one of the men said, leading StanChris to deem the whole conversation to be “Padam“.

Minogue has always had a very loyal gay fanbase, which “protected” her when her music wasn’t performing so well in the 1990s, Pink News reported.

This year’s Eurovision winner Loreen was even lip-synching the song in a recent TikTok video when she was getting ready for a magazine shoot.

Paris Hilton did a mash up of Padam Padam and We Found Love, a hit from Rihanna and Calvin Harris.

Kylie Minogue ‘couldn’t be happier’

Minogue even made a surprise appearance at the Capital Summertime Ball in London, where she performed the hit song, leaving 80,000 attendees at Wembley Stadium shocked and delighted.

In an interview with Hits Radio UK, Minogue said the success of Padam Padam had taken her by surprise.

“I think the last moment like this would have been Can’t Get You Out Of My Head, which just took off,” she said.

“I couldn’t be happier about it,” she said, about the reaction to Padam Padam.

“It’s taken on a life of its own and I think this only happens, you know, once in a lifetime.”

She said the fact that her music was having astronomical success was just “wild” to her.

Minogue has come a long way since she got her start in showbiz on the soap Neighbours.

In 1987, she released Locomotion, which was wildly successful in Australia.

She has continually put out music since the 1980s, and in 2020 she became the first female artist to have No.1 albums in the UK across five decades.
