Kylian Mbappe breaks silence after France World Cup final loss to Lionel Messi and Argentina

Kylian Mbappe has vowed that France will return after they were beaten on penalties in the World Cup final by Argentina.

The 23-year-old scooped the Golden Boot and became the first player since Sir Geoff Hurst in 1966 to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final. Although his efforts were in vain as Lionel Scaloni's side were crowned world champions for the first time since 1986.

Mbappe went toe-to-toe with his PSG teammate Lionel Messi on Sunday in the Lusail Stadium, in Qatar, as he dragged the reigning champions back into the final with a 90-second second-half double.

Argentina raced into a two-goal lead in the first half as Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria both got on the scoresheet, pouncing on a tepid first half from Didier Deschamps' side.

Reports of a virus swept through the French camp with Oliver Giroud one of the doubts for the final. The former Arsenal and Chelsea man was passed fit to play but was dragged off before the break as the France boss rang the changes.

Two of Mbappe's treble came from the spot, including one in the dying embers of extra-time, but the pick of his goals was his first-time volley which beat Emiliano Martinez.

France were looking to create their own piece of history and become the first back-to-back winners in over half a century. The 23-year-old could've joined Pele as one of the youngest players to win two World Cup winners medals.

On a bittersweet night in Doha, Mbappe beat Messi to the Golden Boot and on Monday, he posted a defiant three-word message. He tweeted: "Nous reviendrons (We will return)."
